25% of children and adolescents (2 to 17) were overweight or obese
67% of adults were overweight or obese
31% of all Australians were obese – up 12% from 1995
It is estimated that there will be $88 Billion additional costs to the Australian economy in the 10-year period 2015 to 2025, if no action taken to slow the rise of obesity.

Participation in ACHPER’s National HPE Day continues to grow. Currently over 55,000 school students from around Australia are registered for this year’s event. This is an important sign that schools recognise their role in helping young people to take steps towards leading healthier and more active lives.

Research shows that children’s participation in physical activity leads to better student engagement, improved academic achievement during school years, and better outcomes in adult life.
On September 6, National Health and Physical Education (HPE) Day was celebrated across Australia.
